From the CDSB of Eastern Ontario:Sportsmanship, talent and fair play were on display as St. Joseph Catholic School in Gananoque hosted a five school Catholic Elementary Hockey round robin tournament on Thursday, January 28, 2010. The tournament proved to be a solid example of how Catholic Communities come together to support their schools, with parents coaching and turning out to cheer for their children.
CDSBEO, Director of Education, Wm. J. Gartland was in attendance. “It’s fantastic to see this level of support from the individual Catholic communities. We are blessed with parents who give their time to help their schools. Whether it’s coaching, serving on Catholic school council, or helping with a fundraiser, these efforts result in a stronger bond between home and school and it’s outstanding to see how much fun they have while they’re doing it.”
Joining St. Joseph in the tournament were teams from St. Mark Catholic School, Prescott; St. Joseph Catholic School, Toledo; St. Francis de Sales Catholic School, Smiths Falls; and St. John Catholic Elementary School, Perth.
Highlights from the day included the awesome display of hockey skills from the 7 girls of St. Francis de Sales who formed the backbone of their aggressive team as well as the scoreless game against the two undefeated teams, St. John Perth and St. Joseph Gananoque.
In the end it was the home team from St. Joseph that took the title with 13.5 points, just half a point ahead of St. John.
St. Joseph Principal, John-Paul Elliott said, “It was a fantastic day. Each team should be proud of the way they played today. They showed dedication to not only their sport, but to their team mates too. It was a wonderful display of Catholic spirit. We are so very grateful to the parents and volunteers who worked so hard to make this day happen.”
