OCSTA Executive Officers Acclaimed at 82nd AGM

TORONTO, April 30, 2012 – Over 200 members of the Ontario Catholic School Trustees’ Association (OCSTA) gathered in Kingston, Ontario last week to witness the installation of the Association’s executive officers during the 82nd Annual General Meeting of the OCSTA membership.
OCSTA is pleased to announce that Marino Gazzola, Chair of the Wellington Catholic District School Board was acclaimed President of the Association. Mr. Gazzola has been a member of the OCSTA Board of Directors since 2007 and has been a trustee with the Wellington Catholic District School Board for 22 years.
A sergeant with the Guelph Police, Mr. Gazzola is a 2000 recipient of the Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association Award of Merit and is also a 1992 recipient of the Lieutenant Governor General of Ontario Medal for Community Service.
“This Association has helped to shape history in this province with respect to Catholic education and the contributions that our system makes to the quality of education in Ontario. I look forward to working on behalf of our 29 Catholic school boards to address the issues and opportunities before us in education today,” said Mr. Gazzola.
Niagara Catholic District School Board Chair, Kathy Burtnik, was acclaimed Vice President of OCSTA. Ms. Burtnik has been a trustee since 1994 and has been a member of the OCSTA Board of Directors since 2008.
In addition to installing the Association’s new Table Officers, the membership acclaimed Northeastern Catholic District School Board Trustee, Colleen Landers OCSTA’s representative to the Canadian Catholic School Trustees’ Association. Colleen is also a member of OCSTA’s Board of Directors. Former Association president, Nancy Kirby, will remain a member of the executive as OCSTA’s Past
The Ontario Catholic School Trustees’ Association is the provincial voice for publicly funded Catholic education. Founded in 1930, OCSTA represents the interests of Catholic school boards that collectively educate approximately 600,000 students in Ontario, from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12.
