(MISSISSAUGA) Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week in Ontario schools runs from November 18-24 and the Dufferin-Peel Catholic School Board and its 146 schools have planned a wide range of events, activities and actions to highlight greater awareness and promote a culture of care, respect and inclusion for all through efforts to eliminate bullying.
As part of Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week, a wide range of board-level initiatives and school events and activities are taking place. These include:
Minute of Silence: On Monday November 19, at 10:00 a.m., all Dufferin-Peel Catholic students and staff will join together in one minute of silence in recognition of all victims of bullying, including bystanders.
Poster Campaign: A series of posters created by Dufferin-Peel students are being distributed to all schools. Each poster incorporates the header, “Stand Up Against Bullying”, as well the scripture verse, “Peace I leave you, my peace I give you.” John 14:27. The posters can be viewed on the board website at www.dpcdsb.org.
Anti-bullying video: Students from St. Roch Secondary School created a 45 second video that highlights the viewer’s ability to stop bullying while providing some examples of actions to do so. This video, which features students, staff, a parish priest, and the director of education, will be shown at all schools as part of the launch of Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week. The video can be viewed on the Dufferin-Peel YouTube channel.
Online Reporting Pilot Project: The board will be initiating a pilot project with select elementary and secondary schools to determine the feasibility of an online reporting format for incidents of bullying. If this proves to be a useful tool, the goal would be to roll it out board wide in the future.
Additional Resources: Numerous other resources and lesson plans for teachers have been made available to assist in classroom and school-based activities.
“We recognize the impact that bullying has on individuals, families and communities’” said John Kostoff, director of education.
”Dufferin-Peel schools work hard to nurture and maintain a culture of care, respect and inclusion for all. We do that through practical, creative and thought provoking means as part of our ongoing efforts to educate and effect change in attitudes and actions. Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week gives us another platform in which to promote positive messages, not only to our students, but beyond the walls of our schools as well.”
In addition to the above board initiatives, events, activities and actions are taking place at all Dufferin-Peel schools. These events are posted on the board website at:
Media is welcome to attend these events.
